Herons Posted by Picasa

Every Chance I Get

I've been out with the eagles and herons again, out in Richmond,
along the dyke walkway beside the marshes. Walking, reflecting,
enjoying silences broken only by the call of the snow geese. There
were thousands of them, rising together as if by a signal, the gold
and horizontal sun lighting up their wings. Then the silence again.
Sometimes in that silence, you find a little song. The phrase "the
smallest crawling creature" comes from Black Elk.

EVERY CHANCE I GET

Every chance I get
Turn a wound into a blessing
Every chance I get
Take the broken, make it whole
Every chance I get
Look for what is missing
Lay my burden down
And raise the soul

Every day I live
Find a lesson in the warning
Every day I live
Ask the sky to shelter me
And every day I give
My brown eyes to the morning
Open wide and see what I can see

Measure silence with my sister
In the holiness of nature
Measure silence with my brother
For the secrets we don't tell
Measure silence as a gesture
To the smallest crawling creature
When a feeling reaches Sunday
Ring a deeper bell

Older doors are closing
Open up a new one
Older doors are closing
The spirit kept in cells
New doors have come open
I just walked right through one
A new spirit is rising
Kindness never fails

Every chance I get
Turn a wound into a blessing
Every chance I get
Take the broken, make it whole
Every chance I get
Recover what is missing
Lay my burden down
And raise the soul
