Better Days #162 : A Trace Of Bagpipes

Thursday, April 7th
10:00 pm -12:00 am PDT
CFRO 102.7 FM Vancouver
http://www.coopradio.org for webcast

This all started when I contacted Scottish songwriter
and singer, Karine Polwart, after reading her name
in a number of places, including nomination polls
for the BBC 2 Folk Awards. The story continued
when I got to hear Karine's subtle and moving cd,
Faultlines, her debut as a solo artist.

Since then - with some help from Karine - I've had
contact with Emily Smith, Colin Blakey, John
Barrow
, Ian D. Green, Cath at Greentrax Records,
and others, and have had my ears opened wide to
an intriguing array of traditional and contemporary
Scottish music artistry.

I've got some other surprises, too, but the full second
hour of this week's show will be devoted to Scottish
artists - Karine, Dick Gaughan, Orchestra Macaroon,
Fine Friday, Shooglenifty and a few more. Though I've
been around folk music much of my life, I'll admit to not
knowing a lot about Scottish music; I still don't, but I'll play
you some things I sure enjoy listening to!

That's Tonight, 10:00 pm to 12:00 midnight, Pacific
Daylight Saving Time (is that what it's called?), when
episode 162 of Better Days takes the air on CFRO...
the station heard around the corner and around the
world. Better Days now has listeners in at least a
dozen countries, and counting. The show is heard at
102.7 fm in the signal area, and live on the web at
http://www.coopradio.org

Bring a memory.

so many wings have come here dripping honey Posted by Hello

mp3 Be With Me

.
You can listen to an mp3 of this song at
http://www3.telus.net/billybob/dougCDs
performed live in Austin TX in June 2004
at the Mickey Newbury Gathering. I was
joined by Mick's youngest, Laura Shayne
Newbury on vocals, Jonmark Stone on lead
guitar, and Marie Rhines on violin.

Be With Me

The road to town is black with ice
Would you be with me?
I have soup, a little rice
Would you be with me?
Look outside, it’s blowing snow
It'd be dangerous to go
Show only what you wish to show
Be with me

The cold night cracks the wooden door
Would you be with me?
I wonder what you came here for
Would you be with me?
A long time I’ve been watching you
The skin so white, the eyes so blue
I know now what I always knew
Be with me

So many wings have come here dripping honey
The winter moon, she has no clouds to wear
I'm good as new, I have no money
The candle weaves a spiral in the air

I made a wish that we would meet
Would you be with me?
I spread my dreams beneath your feet
Would you be with me?
I’m old now, if I lived in doubt
The sun and moon would soon go out
I’ve lived within so long without
Be with me

Gideon came by here this morning
Would you be with me?
He said every invitation needs a warning
Would you be with me?
He’s living in an old hotel
Little to say, so much to tell
I want you, there, I’ve warned you well
Be with me
