Better Days #184 : Kindness

www.coopradio.org

I'm finding my radio legs again after a soul-dancing
time away in northern Europe. With all the new music
that I gathered on the journey - and which had piled
up in my mailbox at home while I was gone - it was
hard to get back to the main idea of each show being
a story, offering an inexpensive two-hour vacation
for those too tapped to travel. Heck, I had enough new
music to play for a month, and I almost did that.

I've been home three weeks now and the transforming
spell of being a traveler is waltzing big-foot awkwardly
with the practicalities of everyday life again. On the
road, you like to have a beer sometimes; on the old
treadmill of the day-to-day, you need to have a beer
sometimes. The two hours of each week that I go to
air is reserved for the wine, though.

This week's episode, #184, is called Kindness. One of
the spirits who kept me company on the road all
summer is the Dalai Lama. He said, "My religion is
very simple; my religion is kindness." I was witness
to such kindness from people, and was humbled by
the welcomes I received, from friends, from strangers.
It boosts the spirit to know that a sleepy-eyed man
in his fifties carrying a guitar and a suitcase full of
wrinkled clothes can still roam the world and be
treated with care and grace and affection.

This week's show goes out to the people who gave me
shelter, who fed me, who kept me company, and who
firsthand showed me the religion of kindness. If you're
listening Thursday night, I'd love to pour each of you
a glass of wine.

The show is heard live around the corner at 102.7 fm
from 10pm to the midnight hour Pacific time, and live
around the world by webcast at www.coopradio.org

Let me pull the cork, let it air.
